Sethu Samudhiram

[ctsy - Manitham ]

"The Union cabinet has approved the Sethusamudram ship canal project, which was conceived about 150 years ago. The project many not be as important as the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal, but it will definitely change the Indian navigation scenario. Described by commentators as the Suez of the East, the new canal will reduce the travel time for ships moving from the east coast to the west coast by almost a day. This would mean savings in time, fuel and money. However, the project will need investment and recurring expenses towards maintenance of the canal." - excerpt from Financial Express.

More than a Social activity, this has become a political activity. Hope this project becomes live soon, without any hick-up. This project generates a lot of revenue to India (or savings rather). This was supposed to have been done by 1960. And we do it, 45 years later. Shame.

In the process they are destroying the oldest bridge which has so much importance in our heritage and belief. The beautiful islands including rameshwaram will be destroyed over time, Dont play this much with nature. The ships passing thro the canal needs expert navigation, look at the path, it looks like some sort off a small maze. I hope God does definitely intevene and stops this project, he already gave a hint in the form of Tsunami, also experts say the canal would carry the Tsunami force and affect even the West coast which had last time escaped the Tsunami because of the natural protection.

Since my dad served on behalf of the state govt. and has worked at Rameshwaram he has always talked about this concept that was conceived decades back but never took off. While any change that is made to existing natural structures will have an impact on the local ecosystem, I guess this has to be done in the light of growth of other things like the shipping and fishery industries.

I read different opinion is different sites. There are pluses and minuses due to this project.

One leading magazine ( forgot who) wrote if the ships would be willing to pay the money to use the new route as opposed to going the old route around Lanka and saving money.

Everything is going to depend on the price tag on that route ..that the ships have to pay.

But one this - what about the problems it is going to cause to the wild life that has lived there for the last several years.?

Whey this project all of a sudden...I am clueless.!

Surya, I really think this is a better project in terms of the revenue it would fetch for the Government. It is really Pathotic to see a ship that Starts from Cochin, and to reach Chennai, it has to travel all the way around Srilanka.. This is mad traversal. SO, this is definitely for good. Well The Bridge of Rama wont be visible if we go to that place and see.. it could only be seen from satellites. Rama built that to reach Srilanka.. and it is needed no more.. Practically Iam for this project.

Thennavan, yes, i read it was planned in 1955, and had objectives set in 1960.. and then it had dragged till now.

Venkittu Sir, true.. lots of Pros and Cons in any project.. but this one has more plusses. This doesnt give any profit.. but it prevents a lots of loss. Wild Life ? you mean the fishes ??

The life includes Corals too..they took the impact of tsunami last time.
The Rama's bridge would be dredged?

Suez and Panama canal were built to precent navigating a much larger land mass.Lanka isnt one.

We have carried out enough destruction on the Land, do we need to now target the Sea, there are some formations that have occured per rules of the nature, do we need to play with them? Its going to be an ecological disaster.
