Mani had done a similar attempt with Iruvar. MGR and MK were brought live via Mohanlaal and Prakashraj. They are potentially great actors. And they were capable of those roles.
But Abishek Bachchan is not that good an actor, as far as I have seen. But Im sure Maniratnam would have extracted the maximum out of him. (He made Simran act well in Kannathil Muththamittaal).

Abishek is a deadpan. I watched both Yuva and AE I thought Junior B wasn’t half as good as Maddy. It's a parody that Abishek looks funny in this picture.

I believe, the way we find an actor or as a matter of fact anyone good is by the way they connect to us. Its not what they are but what they make us feel, in that sense, I felt AB had done gr8 work in Yuva. Being in Delhi for four years then and seeing Yuva there made me perceive the performance in a different way. Though apart from AB, i liked AE better than Yuva. Mannerisms, tonal modulations, facial expressions etc hold different meanings in north and south, and we end up seeing hindi movies with a tamil mindset. I felt, maddys' performance still had an element of the lover boy persona in it, where you couldnt hate him fully. Instead Abhi ends up irritating you, giving you the same sorta feel as jeevan gives you in kakka kakka. Maybe thats why Mani ended up giving AB the role over other bigshots...
Lets wait for the treat.. hope its a big success..
