Keerthi, With Kamal there's only a thin line between inspiration and plagiarism. Some of his works can be called more-than-just-inspired. I'm not even talking about Avai Doubtfire here. Just hit any Tamil movie DF and you'll get those details. My only grouse is he should avoid this Hollywood mogam and bring out the best from our cinema a la Thevar Magan, Mahanadi, Hey ram etc.
Contrary to what many detractors might say, he doesn't *copy* movies per se, but he DOES copy situations, scenes, narratives, ideas etc. And in quite a few films you might find more than one source of inspiration e.g Virumaandi - The *style* is based on Rashomon but the treatment and the story are totally different. The scene where he 'transforms' before the dead Apatha [S.N Lakshmi] is inspired by Marlon Brando's by-his-wife's-deathbed scene in Bertolucci's 'Last Tango In Paris', though Thalaivar's acting in that scene is clearly original. The jail inmates breaking open the jail door is taken from Staley Kubrick's Spartacus. Avvai had more in common with Tootsie than Mrs.DF and Nammavar may have been inspired by The Principal. However, a movie whose name i cant recollect starring Samuel L Jackson had strikingly similar elements to Nammavar [thanks to The Principal] but was released after Nammavar! There are some who argue baselessly that Anbe Sivam was a REMAKE of Planes, Trains & Automobiles but actually apart from the common situations - 2 of them in an airport, hotel etc everything else is different and original. There are quite a few examples....
All that said, i have to admit that I have a grouse with Aandavar - too many 'inspirations' take away the credit due to him even if/where he is original. There are instances where the scenes he copies turn out to be very corny like the 'periscope' one in Aalavandhaan a la Saving Private Ryan etc.. Idhai konjam thavirkalaam. 'Inspirations' like these make him fair game for detractors
